Flightless Fruit Fly Culturing Instructions

Updated: Feb 1, 2020

Culturing Instructions:

In a small bowl,

Smash one banana until it is a paste consistency (I have used banana baby food with great results)

Add in enough instant potatoes to thicken the paste but keep it moist.

Add about a cap full of apple cider vinegar to help prevent mold.

Add the mixture to your culturing cup and tap cup on a table to even out mixture

Sprinkle a pinch or two of yeast and a thin layer of cinnamon over the culture medium

Add a hand full of excelsior to the cup. This gives the flies something to crawl on and adds more surface area to the entire culture.

Poke small holes in the lid of your container. You can then either stuff them with filter floss to prevent flies from escaping or you can glue coffee filter paper over the holes.

Tap about 30-50 flies into the new culturing cup with the new medium and quickly add the lid.

Your new culture should start producing in about 10 days!!

Instructions For Use:

To harvest your flies to feed your critters, simply tap the bottom of the cup on a table so that all the flies fall to the bottom.

Turn the culture up and tap out desired number of flies. I tap them out into a cup and them put them in to my aquariums. This help me better control the number of flies that I feed and it makes it much easier to coat them with calcium powder.

Return excess amount of flies to the culture.

Just remember to ALWAYS tap the bottom of the cup or top of the lid BEFORE opening your culture!!
